Production-wise, it is a very well done drama. Story-telling and characterization... overrated.

I swear to God almost everyone in this show was dumb and the script was trying so hard to sell that they were all smart but it didn't work at all (and it didn't help that I watched this at the same time I watched NiF). In almost every episode someone was saying "you are so smart". Bish, where?? Every "good" character was or either making a wrong decision (Changge, Hao Du, Shuyu) or were acting with hysteria (Mimi, the Crown Prince). The script was horrible; Changge was supposed to be a smart strategist, and all she said was "let's put this group to the right and this to the left" and the other party was "wow Changge, you are so smart, be my right-hand commander".

First episode, Changge is this intelligent, tomboy girl who knows how to fight, physically and mentally. Second episode, Changge swears to take revenge. 40 episodes later and all Changge did was saying this and that and was the smartest; as for the battles, where was the girl so agile who could fight? She was constantly saved by others; the forever damsel in distress.

Yueyan had a better character development; seemed like she was going to be the damsel in distress but she had more adventures and dangerous situations than Changge and even knew how to overcome them ON HER OWN. She may have been timid but she was braver. Except she has another facepalm moment around episode 40-42 where she still thinks she has a chance with Shuyu.... she has a heartbreak in one episode and in the same episode she overcomes it and realizes she loves Hao Du. Character development made wrong.

The only smart character was Sun.... he was honest and knew how to say things straight and also could sense when something was wrong. The others **facepalm** Hao Du was all talks and no action and poor Wei Shuyu was just so dumb.... the sweetest boy but very dumb.

OST is excellent. Performed by the King an Queen of CDramas OST. So of course the songs are good. I did not fall in love with them but I can admit they are powerful songs. And I did like the use of illustrations to show battles and fires and flood.... I was expecting more use of it because it was unique.

This drama was 10 episodes too long; should have ended around 40 at least.

My rating: **5/10**

This drama should have been called "Fan Xian Collecting Geges/Guniangs" because all older guys wanted to be his father and all pretty ladies fall for his charms XD

I started this drama because of Xiao Zhan, but he is in the last 8 episodes or so, and since the very first episode I didn't mind because I was immediately hooked. The little boy that played Fan Xian was so good and charming I was sad to see "older" Fan Xian... I wouldn't have minded to have at least 10 episodes with little Fan Xian.

But I didn't know this was just Season 1 and Season 2 has not even started filming yet till I was on Ep15 or so :( so I think people who starts this should keep that in mind.. the cliffhanger is O_O

While I liked the characterization of all characters, and I specially like Fan Xian (thank G.. I think it is very important to like or respect the MC to enjoy a drama), I didn't trust half of them. Or more than half of them. Is this one a bad guy or a good guy? It was like this for most of the drama, but even with that, I was enjoying it. The passive-aggressiveness is hilarious, from Fan Xian and the Princess Royal, to the Crown Prince and the 2nd Prince, to the stepmother and Fan Xian at the beginning of the drama.

I am not one that particularly enjoys too much romance, so this one has just the perfect amount of it. Not too much and besides, Wan'Er makes Fan Xian happy. And she isn't dumb nor a damsel in distress, except for the fact that she is sick. So I don't understand why people do not like her :( If this was a harem, I wouldn't have minded to see Fan Xian married to Wan'Er, Si Lili and Duo Duo... all these girls were good in a way or the other and very different from each other, and best of all, they all had chemistry with Fan Xian.

The acting was good, wigs and costumes were excellent; the plot is WOW, so there isn't a single dull moment in the entire 46 episodes. In fact, I even think it was a bit short because I wanted to see more of Uncle Wu Zhu, of Fan Xian's siblings (Ruo Ruo and Fan Si Zhe... so smart and caring one, while so funny and charming the other), of the headmasters (I wanted more fight scenes tbh). The songs were so fitting, specially the OP song, while the ED song became easily one of my favorites... I listen to it regularly <3 with XZ beautiful voice.

If I had to complain, it would be that I didn't understand a few things... or it was extremely witty and too advanced for my poor brain, or some things got lost in translation...

As for XZ, this is the kind of role I love to see him play: a dubious one, not nice, not charming with big eyes, but suspicious with fierce eyes. Looking forward to see him in Season 2! I love that little smile from Zhang Ruo Yun at the end XD

Nana is a servant of the Kazahaya family, She is from a samurai family. Her father was about to reveal wrongdoings within the domain, but had to commit ritual suicide for a crime he hadn't done. Ichinoshin tries to correct the wrongdoings, but end up being a target himself. After finding out her father's enemy is the man behind it all, Nana decides to protect Ichinoshin and his children, as she had promised Sachi, Ichinoshin's late wife. (wiki-addicts-2019)

I've wanted to watch this short drama ever since it was announced but then I forgot about it. If it wasn't for my newfound obsession for Machida Keita, I wouldn't have started yet. So thank you Keita!

This was my only historical drama of 2020; it is a quiet and easy to watch story; with compelling characters and a poetic storytelling. All of it was poetic, really: the setting, the script, the OST... beautiful. Kiyohara Kaya has been almost from the beginning of her career a Main Lead material; her acting is very natural, her smile and tears are so gentle-like. There is a strong feature in her, but also a vulnerable side, so it was understandable how she gains multiple allies along the story.

Nana is the daughter of a samurai, and after the death of her parents, she works as a maid in the house of a samurai, played by Machida Keita. Nana comes to love both her master and mistress dearly, and after the death of her mistress, is determined to always be by the side of the children + their father. But a complot makes her Master being falsely accused and put into jail, she decides to protect the children. Thankfully, even when being alone and without a penny, she works hard, and along the way, gains several comrades that help her one way or another.

I love this kind of story, where the heroine is strong and seems to be alone, but she actually isn't, because thanks to her will and kindness, she manages to keep going forward and gain the trust and loyalty of other people (even people who seem fishy at first, but end up being the most loyal). And I love her revenge against the man who made her father commit seppuku.

I only wanted a HEA for her; I honestly thought the romance wouldn't prosper but happily, it did. I am so happy that she won his heart by the end (not really by the end; he was fond of her before that, but he also was still mourning his wife's death). Keita was excellent as her Master; kind, strong and handsome. Not all is serious, there are moments of comedy, like Nana giving people's nicknames XD

Drama series follows the life of historical figure Takamori Saigo. He was born the first son of a lower-class samurai. He was exiled two times and went through three marriages. Takamori Saigo became the central figure of the Meiji Restoration, but he fights against the government's army. (asiawiki-2018)

Segodon-P1

My first taiga. I decided to start watching it as soon as I've read Suzuki Ryuhei would be the lead; he is one of my favorite actors, and he did justice to it. I loved watching him as Kichinozuke. I think he had a great chemistry with his best friend Shozuke (Eita). They both were awesome and had so much passion in their eyes.. so much they teared up many times. It seems like both of them were more important for the other than their own families... all the times someone died in Saigo's family, he didn't cry as much as Shosuke did at the end.

The only problem I had while watching it was that I was lost among all the politic stuff. I've read a little bit when I finished the drama, and still some things were confusing to me. Like, why did Ichizo changed to much from one day to the other? His deep friendship with Saigo ended abruptly, all because of their different point of view.

Seems like the story was very faithful except for when Saigo wanted to go to Korea. In the drama, they made it seem like he wanted to go for peace (for the Japanese immigrants in Korea). However, from what I've read, he wanted to go to cause war with Korea. So he wasn't as good as the drama portrayed, at the end. I mean, they showed that he wasn't the gentle giant that he seemed he was going to be, with all the battles and he not caring about all the deaths. So I am not sure why they changed that part.

Women were either housewifes or child-bearer in the story. I felt sorry for Ichizo's wife, having to live later on with Ichizo's mistress and son, all in the same house.

So there was too much politics and battles for me to fully enjoy it. But I liked the actors and I like that I've got to know one of the most prominent figures in Japan's history.

In 1802, 8-year-old Mio lost her parents in a river flood in Osaka and feels all alone after she is also separated from her childhood friend Noe. She is saved by Yoshi, the proprietress of ‘Tenman Icchoan’, one of Osaka’s famous restaurants, whom she happened to meet. Mio begins training as a cook because of her gift for taste in a time when females were still banned from the kitchen. However, the restaurant was burnt down in a fire and she sets off for Edo with Yoshi and her husband Kahei. By some lucky coincidence, they are invited by Taneichi, the owner of ‘Tsurya’, to work at his soba shop. Mio is bewildered by the contrasting flavors of the Kansai region and Edo, and also has to deal with the obstructions of a rival shop and a status difference in her love with the samurai Komatsubara. She overcomes these difficulties and eventually becomes a top female cook. (mydramalist-2017)

A very heartwarming dorama. I wasn't expect that, since the summary tells that it is about the difficulties of a young girl to be a cook in a chauvinistic world. And it is but it is also about the kindness of people, how they help each other in small but significant ways; it is also about family and to care about someone else's well being. And of course, it is also about overcoming the difficulties in life with the help of people who loves you.

I am adding Kuroki Haru in my list of favorite actresses. Whenever role she plays, I just want her to be happy And when she is, her happiness is contagious. And she is so gentle, so Japanese-lady-like. My other favorite in this dorama was her mistress (Yasuda Narumi), who loved her as a mother. Her love for her adopted daughter, and for her son was beautiful. Her sad smile was so poignant...

There is a little reunion of members of "Juhan Shuttai", which made me really happy (4 of them!). Starting with the MC, who again works hard in what she loves XD And is spite of working again with Nagayama Kento (Nagata-sensei), I was rooting for Komatsubara-san since the very beginning. I loved when there is respect and a little bit of teasing from the love interest XD

I love the setting, since historical stories set in Edo period are most of the times my favorites. The food that are shown look mostly so tasteful (and there is a little culinary demonstration of the main recipe of the day at the end of each episode, performed by the amazing Kuroki Haru). The other time, when I was eating with other people and they were "ohhh my, so delicious" I laughed internally because that's what happens every time people eats Mio's food).

The OST is lovely, it helped to keep the tone light.

For rewatch value, yes, I would watch it again, specially when the SP is subbed (there HAS to be a SP... when I finished Ep 8 I was like, WHAT?). Besides, it is very short, with 8 episodes only, of 35 minutes aprox each ep.).

Former legendary assassin Kenshin Himura (Takeru Satoh) has now become a wandering samurai. Offerring aid & protecting those in need as atonement for his past deeds. During this time Kenshin Himura comes across and aides Kaoru Kamiya (Emi Takei). Her father opened the Kamiya Kasshin-ryu, a kendo school located in Tokyo and Kaoru is now an instructor there. Kaoru then invites Kenshin to stay at her dojo. Their relationship develops further, but Kenshin is still haunted by his violent past ... (asianwiki - 2012)

Rurouni_Kenshin-p2

It was a good adaptation; they all resembled the characters somehow, and the battles were the best of the movie, just like in the manga. To be honest, I am not really a fan. I've read a couple of volumes of the manga, watched like 20 episodes of the anime, so I wasn't really looking forward for this. Anyway, I really liked the cinematography, and Sato Takeru did excellent with all his battles (really nice special effects there).

I just wish there were more about Sanosuke and Yahiko. And Kenshin and Kaoru barely have any interaction, so zero chemistry there. It was more about the bad guys and Megumi and the opium, not so much about the band (Kenshi, Kaoru, Yahiko, Sanosuke; the latter doesn't even talk to Megumi in the whole movie, meh).

Botchan

Botchan (Kazunari Ninomiya) has sense of strong justice and does not lie. He is offered a teaching job at a middle in a small village far away from his hometown of Tokyo. Botchan accepts the position and begins to work as a math teacher. The assistant principle there wields absolute power. Botchan has a hard time dealing with his fellow teachers and the students. (asianwiki)

Bocchan-p01

This was a good adaptation from the book, and Nino certainly "looked" like Botchan. Of course they cut off some parts (what I remember, for example, is when Botchan and the Math Teacher spied on Red Shirt), and the character of Madonna was more elaborated. We get to hear Botchan's thoughts at some parts, specially at the beginning, but I missed his voice when it came to the English Teacher. Because I laughed many times with all his thoughts about him.

I like the setting, I did not know it was on Meiji era, I wanted to face-palm. Overall the actors were good (I wish the Assistant was more annoying but it could be that I like the actor so much I couldn't see him as an annoying guy). And just like in the book, it ended "eh?".

Saburo (Shun Oguri) is a high school student good in sports, but not very good with his studies. One day, Saburo travels back in time and arrives in the Sengoku period of 1549.

There, Saburo meets Nobunaga Oda who looks and sounds just like Saburo. Nobunaga Oda is the son of a warlord and magistrate of the lower Owari Province. Nobunaga Oda though is physically weak and he asks Saburo to take his place. Then, Saburo as Nobunaga Oda attempts to unify the country of Japan. (asianwiki-2014).

Nobunaga_Concerto-p1

Well, that was a disappointment. This dorama had everything to be a success, but it failed. I was so excited to watch it... Not that it doesn't have good things. But it is like all good things have a counteract.

- Good cast: many good actors (Yamada Takayuki, Osamu Mukai, Shibasaki Kou), many popular actors (Fujiki Naohito, Mizuhara Kiko, Maeda Atsuko), good guest actors (Namase Katsuhisa, Nishida Toshiyuki) BUT, to me, only 3 were exceptionally good. They were Kaho, Osamu Mukai and Takahashi Issei. I may have cried a little bit with Kaho and Issei, their roles were touching and they were so good, with such a natural acting. I can't say the same for Oguri Shun as Saburo... he can't play a goofy guy without seem pathetic. It was like was trying too hard. There was no chemistry between him and his wife; it was like they were more siblings like a married couple. Yamada Takayuki was too creepy (creepy smile, creepy role and creepy stalking). There were a lot of shouting; "donno!" this, "donno!" that; the guy who played Mori was laughably bad.

- Beautiful outfits, with a nice fabric and catching colors. BUT, they were hardly historical costumes. They were too modern. WTH with Nobunaga and his outfits that resembled pajamas? If I am correct, the dorama takes a span of at least 6-7 years (at the beginning Nobunaga's sister gets married and at the end, she has 3 daughters). Saburo goes to the Warring States period with a pair of grey socks. And by the end of the dorama, he still has the same pair? Because in no way he kept at least half a dozen of the same socks in his bag. He goes with a white hoodie, and in the 2nd episode he has ANOTHER white hoodie. I get that he has to have some outfits that make him HIM, a person from another time, but to have his clothes half in one fabric and half in another was too much...

- It has it touching moments, like the one with Oyuki and Ichi and her husband, BUT there were many corny scenes as well. I hate when the dorama shows the audience how nice and kind a person is, trying to sell us his/her good image just to kill that character later. Not that I liked the guy, he was so pathetic. I couldn't even watch his face, and every time he shouted "Donno!!", my, how annoying. His son was another pathetic character.

- I like time travel stories, BUT, it was never explained WHY or HOW Saburo traveled in time. And what about the others? And what happens in the present day? I guess I am comparing it to JIN, where all was well explained.

- I liked that Saburo, with his fresh personality, made his retainers to love him, BUT it was also kind of ridiculous and far from believable how he escaped several dangerous situations, how no one wondered about his clothes or weird behavior.

- Good OST, there was one sweet, quiet one. I liked the opening sequence + the opening song (it was like adventurous, rockish) and the ending song is one of Mr Children, whom I know now from Orange Days. It was a good song, BUT there was one soundtrack that didn't suit the story at all and it was used several times when it wasn't supposed to be used. Like, it was a serious scene but the OST was like a fun one.

- I did not like the end. Besides, from being an annoyed Nobunaga's loyal retainer ("You are not the real Nobunaga, go away please") he suddenly decides that "please, stay with us donno". Huh? Make up your mind Tsune-chan. I hate that I won't see Hanbee anymore in the movie, and that Yamada Takayuki will still be there with that creepy smile.

I don't know, many things would have been OK if this was a comedy, but it wasn't. And it wasn't a JIN either.

In ancient Rome, architect Lucius (Hiroshi Abe) is too rigid in his ways and unable to keep up with the fast changing times. Because of this, Lucius loses his job. A friend then takes Lucius to a bath house to cheer him up. There at the bath house, Lucius slips through a time portal and arrives at a bath house in present day Japan!

Thermae_Romae-P1

I always thought I would love everything Abe Hiroshi stars in, but I was wrong. I am so sorry Abe-san! I admire you, I adore you, you are the best, but this wasn't your best movie. I am not sure if it was a comedy or a drama or what. Yes, it has elements of comedy, but they weren't so funny. The first time he travels in time to modern Japan, it was fine. And wow, his body... he is mostly naked or semi-naked in the whole movie, so that is a big plus! He has an amazing body, and with his height... **swoon**.

But he comes and goes, comes and goes, and the repetitiveness of him being amazed at everything that relates to modern bath loses it touch, the fun. Since I am going to Japan, I found them very interesting, but that was it. The actors were good: for once Ueto Aya played a good, goofy mangaka with a nice sense of fashion. She did not try to be cute, like she always does (ok, not always since I've seen her in just a couple of movies/doramas yet. But what I saw she is always like that). Kitamura Kazuki (Keioniusu) is better suit for this kind of role: arrogant, evil, etc, instead of the goofy one (he overacts too much while trying to look nice). I don't have any complains about the actor who played Hadrian... he never overeacts, and all the roles that I've seen him played before suit him perfectly... He can be the bad guy, the good guy, the yakuza guy, and well, even an Italian emperor.

The locations, beautiful. All green and vast, just like I like them. But to be honest, the story... it was like sometimes it was more of a parody than a... comedrama? dramacomedy? The soundtrack was all Italian songs, operas more than anything. When Lucius, or the old men, were swallowed by the water, it was obvious they were dolls (Ken dolls, most likely). Instead of an onsen or a bath, it was obvious it was some kind of bowl.

Overall, some scenes + the soundtrack + the soprano seemed a parody. Cast and locations, beautiful. Abe Hiroshi: so manly and so talented. Story, MEH.

In the year 1716 a mysterious epidemic stickens men in the country of Japan, dropping the population of men to 1/4th of its prior state. With the drastic reduction of men, the gender roles have become reversed in Japan. Woman become the dominant members of society and males are sought out for the ability to produce children.

A young man named Unoshin Mizuno (Kazunari Ninomiya) hopes to marry childhood sweetheart Onobu (Maki Horikita), but due to class differences realizes this is almost impossible. To raise his social status and also save his poor family, Unoshin Mizuno enters the Ohoku (inner chambers of the Shugun's castle) and attempts to vie among 3,000 other men for the affection of the female shogun. What Unoshin Mizuno quickly learns about the Ohoku is that the men there are all beautiful, but highly ambitious and conniving. In this environment, the 7th shogun Tokugawa passes away and the new shogun Yoshimune Tokugawa (Kou Shibasaki) takes the thrown and enters the Ohoku ...

Ohoku-p2

This movie was really well done, very loyal to the manga (except for the ending). Amazing, but the whole movie is the first volume of the manga, only. I did not notice the manga was so long. So not only it is exactly like the manga, but the locations of the movie were beautiful! The castle, the town, the inner chambers... all so vast and clean and with so much light.

The cast... wow, amazing cast. Nino was good as Mizuno, but I wish he was taller. And maybe more handsome (the story is like that, it is not like I am shallow, but Mizuno needs to be, besides one of the prettiest boys, a strong one, a tall one, an agil one). At least he was very good at fighting. His little feet... <3 so cute. But those sex scenes (nothing explicit, just Nino, err, moving atop of an old lady) reminded me of that article that told that Nino is a sex-beast. Hahaha, impossible not to think about it.

This is the first time I see Shibasaki Kou, the Shogun Lady, and my first impression was, wow, she looks like Nakatani Miki. So lady-like, so imposing. She has a bit of a funny face due her mouth, but all in all, she is very beautiful (those eyes!). She doesn't make an appearance in front of her men until 1 hour and 10 minutes have passed.

All the other characters are actors I love. I can't complain, although, among the most beautiful men, there was one that I think is THE most beautiful, but if you blink, you miss him. He is my beautiful Saito Syuuske. Oh well, Ohkura looks nice, although a bit too feminine, and Tamaki looks handsome as well.

HoriMaki was cute and OK (although as stiff as ever when she has to kiss someone!), Sadai Abe is always good in no matter what role (funny, silly or serious) and wow, Nakamura Aoi, that boy from "BECK" got a kiss in the lips from Nino! Exaclty like in the manga, I am glad they did not exclude that scene merely for that fact. Terrible what these guys have to deal with: Ohkura, being of a lower rank, was the lover of Tamaki (higher rank). But Tamaki again has a lower rank of Matsushima, so he was, again, the lover of another guy.

That is my complain about the story (not the movie). Since the country was dealing with the death of men due the Redface pox, and there was 1 man for every 4 women, why in the world were 800 men inside the castle, while outside the few men left had to sell their bodies to give the women their seed? Why in the world would the Shogun need 800 men, if she could get pregnant just once in a while? Why in the world were men working as maids, and, having to be locked from the outside world, seek physical pleasure with other men, while outside there were hundreds of women needing a man? It was an issue that the same Mizuno questioned... men sleeping with other men and wasting their seed.

All in all, it was a great movie, great costume (but truly, the outfit the men had to wear, and the Shogun, for that matter, was completely ridiculous.. they could barely walk!), great cast... The (my) only problem was the story. At least it ended well (although unlikely).

In late Edo period of Japan, a vassal of the Akashi Domain named Tosho Mamiya (Masaaki Uchino ) commits suicide in front of the gate of Roju, the family of Lord Doi (Mikijiro Hira). By his suicide, he accuses the lord of Akashi Domain, Naritsugu Matsudaira (Goro Inagaki), with committing atrocities like murder & rape. Naritsugu Matsudaira, who is the younger brother of the shogun Ieyoshi, is set to become the Roju next year. The Shogun clan becomes disturbed by the case and believes the country's stability & peace is threatened by Naritsugu Matsudaira. Lord Doi then decides to assassinate Naritsugu Matsudaira and orders samurai Shinzaemon Shimada (Koji Yakusho) to carry out the deed.

Shinzaemon Shimada gathers eleven men, including a butcher ronin named Kuzuro Hirayama (Tsuyoshi Ihara) & Shinzaemon Shimada's own nephew Shinrokuro Shimada (Takayuki Yamada), who is a gambler, alcoholic and womanizer. As their plan progresses, Naritsugu Matsudaira's head samurai Hanbei Onigashira (Masachika Ichimura) hears of the assassinaton plan. Years ago, Hanbei Onigashira & Shinzaemon Shimada were fellow pupils of the sword, but ideological differences led them to part ways. Now, a mental battle between Hanbei Onigashira & Shinzaemon Shimada begins.

Shinzaemon Shimada believes the only way to assassinate Naritsugu Matsudaira is to ambush him in the town of Ochlai, while he is returning home from Edo. The assassins are dispatched to Ochlai to fortify the town and lay traps. During this time the assasins pick up a 13th member, a mountain man named Koyata Saga (Yusuke Iseya).

When the 13 assassins' plan is set to begin, they encounter many surprises, none of which is bigger than facing an army of more than 200 samurais ...

13assassins-p1

The main reason this movie attracted my attention was, not the reviews saying it was a phenomenal movie, but the fact that there is a 45 minutes-battle! And that the director is not other than Takashi Miike, the same that directed CROWS ZERO and CROWS ZERO 2 (the latter which has also a long battle scene). I mean, we are talking about a battle, with swords, 12 ronin and 1, errr, warrior, that fight against 200 samurais! That alone is one big and obvious reason to watch it.

Besides that, I wanted to see "rockstar" (hehehe, when I read that his profession was "rockstar" in a review, I laughed) Inagaki Goro, who was perfect as a sadist dono, since he is always so passive and has a kind face, which makes him a perfect choice to play a villain. His acts were sometimes TOO gruesome, thought. Not a movie for everyone.

There are many familiar actors in the movie, actors that I liked and that are good. Like Uchino Masaki (JIN Sakamoto Ryoma), though his scene is super short -maybe 30 seconds long- and he doesn't talk, but he has a powerful scene where he commits harakiri); or Iseya Yusuke (Joker Game Yuki), though he was not such a comedy relief in spite of what almost all reviews say; or Takaoka Sousuke (CROWS ZERO Izaki) and Ishigaki Yuma (HanaKimi 1st Head Dorm). Unfortunately, there is no character development whatsoever, so the audience cannot connect with almost any of them; cannot tell one from the other (all of them, except 2, have the same hairstyle and dark clothes) and at the end, their bravery is not so poignant since we barely know them.

And Yamada Takayuki... ohh, I think his role could have been a little better. Another undercast character. There are only 2 characters that showed personality, besides the villain, and that were the 2 frenemies: one who is the Lord's personal bodyguard, and the other who is the leader of the 13 assassins.

I could not enjoyed it as much as I wanted to because (and the reasons are totally not related to the movie itself): 1) the quality of the video was super low, and since the movie is a bit dark-ish, it was even worse. And 2) the audio was not synchronized with the video. It was like, 1 second behind, and it annoyed the hell out of me.

Yes, the movie was good for what it was, a battle-field with swords, and explorations, and gore and beheaded people. But I would have loved more character development.

Set during the Meiji Restoration period of Edo era Japan, Naoyuki (Masato Sakai) belongs to the 8th generation of the Inoyama family, a wealthy family known for finance & accounting. He is also a gifted mathematician and uses the abacus with extreme skills. Naoyuki works under the declining Kaga domain. Because of this, Naoyuki and his wife Koma (Yukie Nakama) suffer hardships as their stature and wealth dissipates.

Abacus_and_Sword-p2

I searched this movie for a long time. It was a MUST SEE movie for me, since I love Nakama Yukie and Sakai Masato. The pace of the movie is a bit slow, especially at the beginning when I could barely understand a thing. Once Yukie comes in scene, things start to get better and it is when the plot finally starts to flow.

I like the movie, since it has a touch of sweetness as well as reality. Even the soundtrack was cute and calm, just like the story and characters. All in all, the story is a slice of life: about a family who loves the abacus, a skill that goes from father to son; it is also about marriage and financial problems. Since it takes from Sakai Masato's character when he was young, then gets married, then has children and finally, when he is old, it may seem that some scenes happened out of nowhere (like, huh? they were married yesterday and today she is pregnant?) but that is because of the lack of explanation of how many years have gone.

I was moved by Yukie's tears in one scene. And Sakai-san did not disappoint me either. Actually, the whole cast was good, and there were scenes that impacted me more than others. Like when Sakai-san makes his son searched the coin in the rain.

So more than sword, it is about abacus and family. A slice of life, the kind I enjoy to read and watch.

Ichi (Haruka Ayase) is a blind entertainer that travels the countryside with her traditional Japanese guitar and walking stick. She’s in search for the kind man that brought her up as a child, but because of her beauty she encounters problems every step of the way. Fortunately for Ichi, she is also a gifted swordswoman and carries a lethal blade within her walking stick.

One day, members of the notorious Ban-ki gang surround Ichi and prepare to rape her. A passerby then comes to defense of Ichi. The man’s name is Toma Fujihira (Takao Osawa) and although he seems terrified of the men, he still attempts to stand up for the seemingly defenseless blind woman. Once the Ban-ki members draw their swords on Toma Fujihira, Ichi now comes to the defense of the shaking man. After unleashing her blade, she methodically kills all of her attackers.

Ichi and Toma Fujihara then travel the countryside together developing a friendship that hints at romantic interests between the pair. When the couple arrive in the next town they are then confronted by other Ban-ki gang members who attempt to exact revenge on Ichi. (asianwiki)

Ichi

I am sure that anyone who has seen the dorama JIN was compelled to watch this movie as well, since Saki-san (Haruka) and Jin-sensei (Osawa Takao) are the main characters in this movie. Why is their love doomed is my question.

Anyway, I was pretty disappointed with this movie. I guess I was expecting more battles with the sword, a more impressive Ayase Haruka. The story is very slow-paced, or maybe it was the script, which wasn't good. A big crime, because to have these two amazing actors that couldn't prove their talent! I don't know, I think I was expecting the unexpected, and was let down in the process.

What I really liked was the cinematography. It was gorgeous, the background, the snow, the green fields, the clean water of the lake. The villain was colorful, and there were two R-rated scenes that surprised me because so far I haven't seen this kind of scenes in a Japanese movie before.

Not my favorite Haruka movie. It needed a better scriptwriter in my opinion.

2 years has passed since surgeon Jin Minakata (Takao Osawa) first travelled back in time to the latter days of the Edo period.

In the Edo period, the disease beriberi (caused by a lack of vitamin B1) is rampant across Japan. Meanwhile, Saki Tachibana (Haruka Ayase) worries over the deteriorating health of her mother Ei (Yumi Asou). Her mother, who kicked Saki out of their home because of her refusal to go along with an arrange marriage, has now come down with beriberi. Jin attempts to treat her mother, but Saki's mother refuses treatment. Jin thinking of medical treatments decides to use donuts from the present day as treatment for beriberi.

Meanwhile, Ryoma Sakamoto (Masaaki Uchino) comes to Jin and asks him to treat wounded Sakuma Shozan (Masachika Ichimura), who go on to become an important historical figure in Japan. Jin worries over his actions and whether saving an important historical figure could alter history. Jin also encounters a surprise when he treats Sakuma Shozan. (asianwiki)

Jin2-p2

I wish I could un-watch this so I could watch it again, but after crossing out some of my to-be-watched doramas in my list. I don't think I have ever or will ever seen a more wonderful dorama as this one. Everything was perfect (the cast -my, that cast!-, the story, the setting, the soundtrack).

I don't feel like this was a 2nd season. It was pretty much like an extension of the 1st season, so it is kind of hard to rate them separately. Maybe the only and biggest difference is that in 2nd season, Jin-sensei is not struggling so much with medicine and it repercussions in history. Since the photography has vanished, and his actions don't affect Miki's life anymore, he doesn't have any worry about the "what will happen if...". He is happy living in Edo period, he is happy with the Jindo-you (?), he is happy being friends with Ryoma-san. If he can save Ryoma-san from his assassination, he will do it, without a doubt, no matter the consequences.

Only in that aspect I prefer the 1st season to the 2nd. JIN has more medical cases, there were more surgeries and wow, awesome scenes that looked, if not entirely realistic, very good to the point of make me feel boneless. I love how Jin-sensei was so much aware of every one of his actions and what would happen if he did XX thing. 2nd season is more about political issues than medical ones. While 1st season is about penicillin, 2nd season is about battles and revolutions.

There is also a stronger bromance between Jin-sensei and Ryoma-san. Talk about bromance! Because Ryoma-san's assassination is around the corner, Jin-sensei is thinking about his welfare almost all the time. The love triangle between Jin-sensei, Nokaze and Saki-san is almost non-existent. Nokaze finds out the truth about Jin-sensei and Miki, she meets a foreign guy and is married in an episode (out of nowhere). Nokaze encourages the love between Jin-sensei and Saki-san, despite loving him as well.

I've read some reviews where people complained about Saki-san rejecting him. To me it made sense. She did not know when or if he would disappear to go back to the future. She decided to be a good doctor first, which was her dream. On the other hand, I've never felt that Jin-sensei truly loved Saki-san. Cared for her, yes. Loved her as a friend, yes. Loved her as a lover, no. I wouldn't want Saki-san to have Jin-sensei' heart half-arsed. And in a way, it is good, because Jin loved Miki, but he also loved Saki.

Which leads to... isn't their love story almost the same as Inuyasha and Kagome? The love triangle Jin/Miki/Saki = Inuyasha/Kagome/Kikyo. Jin/Inuyasha cannot forget their first love (Miki/Kikyo) which I admire because that is what loyalty is about, but at the same time, I pity Saki/Kagome for loving this fool guy so much and for never been able to have their hearts at 100%.

I don't know yet how to feel about the final chapter. The romantic in me is screaming internally in despair. I have to admit I got a bit tearful (who wouldn't?). It was a touching scene, that part where Jin is reading the letter from the past. And also when he was reading these books and found the photographs of the doctors in Jindo-you. I also wanted to say "minna..." with tears in my eyes...

On the other hand, the practical me says that it couldn't have ended in any other way. It was good, it was convenient (the thing about Miki). It was a bittersweet ending (more bitter than sweet).

About the acting. Ayase Haruka is truly a wonderful actress. She has "the vein" that only exceptional actresses have (like Angie). When she is struggling with her feelings, or when she is suffering, "the vein" (on her forehead) appears. She can cry so nicely, and she can smile so angelically as well. It is impossible not to feel empathy with her.

While in season 1 the acting of Miki (Nokaze) impressed me, her role in 2nd season is less prominent and she pales somewhat with her previous acting. Although I admit that she was superb when her baby was born. I don't think in real life anyone would have endured such a painful experience but her tears and determination to have her baby made me remember the Nokaze I fell in love with in Season 1.

Other actress that impressed me was Saki's mother. This actress, Asou Yumi, has such the face of a mother who had to go through so many painful things in her life. She looked a bit tough, especially on her children but also always on the verge of tears. The episode where she was sick was excellent, and she deserved an award for her performance.

My favorite actor has to be, maybe again, Kiritani Kenta. He is so funny without being a comedy character. His accent -the way he lisps-, his bulging eyes when he is shocked. I also love his character, how much he was into medicine, as well as all the other fellows in the little clinic.

No doubt it is the best dorama I've seen so far. True, I have others I liked as much as this one (probably I love Nodame Cantabile a bit more) but in terms of quality, clothing, setting, story, acting, this is the best there is. The kind of show all people should watch. I don't think there will be one single person who wouldn't love this dorama. It has medicine, politic, good battles, a bit of romance, friendship, family matters, Japan history (not sure of the accuracy but overall I learned a lot).

The story follows a brain surgeon named, Minakata Jin, who has spent the last two years in anguish, as his fiancee lies in a vegetative state after an operation he performed. One day, he faints at the hospital and awakens to find himself transported back in time to the Edo period. He is soon attacked by a samurai, but he escapes with the help of a man named Kyotaro. Kyotaro suffers a serious injury to the head while trying to protect him, but Jin manages to save his life despite a lack of proper medical equipment. Because of that, Kyotaro's sister Saki begins taking an interest in Jin and becomes his assistant. Meanwhile, Jin is determined to find a way back to the present. (dramawiki)

Amazing drama. AMAZING. I was hooked from the very beginning. And what it is best, the last 3 or 2 episodes are not boring or dragging at all (something that I've been dealing with with the last doramas I've watched). Everything was excellent in this dorama. Excellent. I am currently downloading the second season.

This is the first time I see a period drama (a Japanese period drama, that is). I learned so much. First, this character, Sakamoto Ryoma, who is one of Japan's hero (although you would not believe it in this show... he was more like a comedy relief, but I've read some text about him to be more informed). And then, their life styles. This is the 1862 year.

Top-notch things about this wonderful dorama:

- Cast: many familiar faces, but also some new ones. Ayase Haruka has never failed me. She is amazing in everything she does. I think I will like whatever she is in. She plays the daughter of an important family, and she wants to be a doctor (which was not possible in that time, for a woman). Needless to say, she looked gorgeous as Saki-sama, in her kimono and fancy hairdo. Her brother is Koide Keisuke, another actor that has never failed me. He may be a little to tamed here, but I liked him so much he could have said two words in the entire show and I would have still liked him. Other actor that I've recently started to like is Kiritani Kenta (as the doctor Saburi). He has such a funny face, and boy he can act! He was wonderful as the new doctor who practiced his studies with prostitutes. And then it is Nakatani Miki, as Miki and the courtesan Nokaze. WOW, what a pretty, elegant lady. I have seen her only in one movie ("Densha Otoko") and I wasn't impressed. She was too plain, in looks and in acting. Boy did I change my mind! She is beautiful, she moved me with her acting as both Nokaze and Miki. She was so elegant and lady-like as the courtesan. Everything, from her voice to her little movements, were majestic. OMG, even her little feet were elegant. I love her smile, I can't believe I once thought she was plain.

The new faces, for me, were first, Ozawa Takao as Jin. Excellent his role as the doctor. I don't think I will be able to see him in another role, he WAS Dr. Jin. He traveled in time, from present time to Edo time. It was not hard to put into his shoes. Everything he did -every life he saved, every person he met- could change history, and he was afraid of it. But more than anything, he was a doctor, so of course he changed perspectives; his and the people he met. I could understand why two strong females, like Saki and Nokaze, fall in love with him. He was just, he was kind, he was skillful. On the other hand, I could not take sides. I loved Saki, she was an independent woman who was interested in medicine. I loved Nokaze, who had a very sad past and wanted her freedom. I loved Miki, Nokaze's great-great-great-granddaughter and present girlfriend. I could understand why Jin was so aware of the little photograph he took with him (where he and Miki were posing. With every change he made into history, the photograph changed). I don't know how this will end... and although I hate love triangles -or love squares- I wish Jin all the happiness and wisdom to chose a woman among these wonderful women.

At first I thought the actor had a funny face... a bit weird, since his eyes are very apart. But with every laugh I liked him more. He had those tiny wrinkles that made him attractive, he has a nice body and nice teeth. On the other hand, he has a huge Adam's apple (is it weird to take notice of that??)

The actor who played Dr. Ogata was also wonderful. First time I see this man. He did a good job playing the most important doctor in this little town. I was moved by his tears. And I was convinced of his importance and intelligence.

The little boy... waaa, I had tears in my eyes when he was crying for his mother. At first I thought he was a bit annoying and not a good actor, but he proved me wrong with the scene with his mother.

Oh, and Kohinata Fumiyo has a small role as well! He was, of course, wonderful. WOW the number of roles he played so far! One of the most prolific Japanese actors.

The man who played Ryoma-san was good, first time I see him. I just did not like his role that much, mainly because of the way he talked, and also because I just couldn't make up my mind that a guy like him has been the most important guy in Japan history. He was just too... he took things like a joke, which is fine of course, but as Ryoma-san... not so much I guess.

- Setting: the backgrounds were beautiful. The houses -so Japanese-, the gardens! The little red district... the trees! Houses were wide and so clean.

- Costumes: Saki's kimonos and Nokaze's... O_O WOW, beyond gorgeous. Their hairstyles, Nokaze's high shoes, her make-up. I loved one of Saki's kimono which was pink. Or another that was blue with little flowers. Scratch that, I loved ALL her kimonos! From the top of their heads to their tiny feet... everything was pretty.

- The surgeries: I am one of those people that cannot see blood... and since Jin is a doctor who has to perform surgeries -brain surgery, skin surgery, breast surgery...- everything looked very real. I was like O_O OMG. And of course, praying that Jin could save his or her life. It did not always happen -obviously- but I was so happy when he did.

- Soundtrack: the ending song not so much. But the opening and the one that accompanied the most important scenes (by Takami Yu). It was sweet and a bit sad and just beautiful. I loved it and I am currently searching it to have it on my playlist. One of my favorite dorama songs.

Before I decided to watch it, I've read several reviews in order to decide. Most of the reviews said that the end was not good. I think it was good, a bit of a cliffhanger but not a life-or-death problem. It ended like it was supposed to end. Some get their happy ending, some get a HFN. A perfect way to continue a 2nd season, but for people who did not like it so much, it can also end here. Overall, it was satisfying.

My final rating: 10/10
