Drama series follows the life of historical figure Takamori Saigo. He was born the first son of a lower-class samurai. He was exiled two times and went through three marriages. Takamori Saigo became the central figure of the Meiji Restoration, but he fights against the government's army. (asiawiki-2018)

My first taiga. I decided to start watching it as soon as I've read Suzuki Ryuhei would be the lead; he is one of my favorite actors, and he did justice to it. I loved watching him as Kichinozuke. I think he had a great chemistry with his best friend Shozuke (Eita). They both were awesome and had so much passion in their eyes.. so much they teared up many times. It seems like both of them were more important for the other than their own families... all the times someone died in Saigo's family, he didn't cry as much as Shosuke did at the end.
The only problem I had while watching it was that I was lost among all the politic stuff. I've read a little bit when I finished the drama, and still some things were confusing to me. Like, why did Ichizo changed to much from one day to the other? His deep friendship with Saigo ended abruptly, all because of their different point of view.
Seems like the story was very faithful except for when Saigo wanted to go to Korea. In the drama, they made it seem like he wanted to go for peace (for the Japanese immigrants in Korea). However, from what I've read, he wanted to go to cause war with Korea. So he wasn't as good as the drama portrayed, at the end. I mean, they showed that he wasn't the gentle giant that he seemed he was going to be, with all the battles and he not caring about all the deaths. So I am not sure why they changed that part.
Women were either housewifes or child-bearer in the story. I felt sorry for Ichizo's wife, having to live later on with Ichizo's mistress and son, all in the same house.
So there was too much politics and battles for me to fully enjoy it. But I liked the actors and I like that I've got to know one of the most prominent figures in Japan's history.
**My rating: 8.5/10**
