When Surgeon Kazuaki Okita (Takuya Kimura) was a rookie doctor, he was kicked out of the hospital due to his friend’s Masao Danjo (Tadanobu Asano) plan. He left for the U.S., leaving behind his girlfriend Mifuyu (Yuko Takeuchi). With his hard work, he became an excellent surgeon.

10 years later, he comes back to Japan by request of Mifuyu’s father, who is a hospital director. Mifuyu is now married to Masao Danjo. (asiawiki-2017)

A_Life_(Japanese_Drama)-p1

I guess the main reason that people who watched this dorama was because of the cast. Myself included. A A class cast. I was really excited. Then, the first episode was finished and I was bored to death. Would I continue or not? Several weeks went by, and since there were more subbed episodes uploaded, I decided that, what the heck, let's continue. I marathoned like, 5 episodes in a row. It is not like it was, OH, HOW GOOD, but it gets better starting episode 2.

I think episode 1 was mainly boring because it looked like it was going to be a drama about unrequited love (Okita-sensei and Mifuyu), and I also hated that every other doctor was against Okita-sensei. Specially Igawa-sensei (Matsuyama Kenichi) and Haruma-sensei (Oikawa Mitsuhiro). Thankfully, Igawa-sensei overcomes his jealousy and becomes Okita-sensei's mentee. Unfortunately, Haruma-sensei remains a suspicious character for most of the season.

Mifuyu's brain tumor drags for the whole 9 first episodes; it is in episode 10 were she finally gets her surgery. I liked that at least there isn't a romance per se. I mean, I get why people wanted them to be together (for the whole "Pride" reunion, etc) but she was a married woman, so of course the romance couldn't be done. Which makes me wonder, why the heck the producer, director, or whoever, made this cast if there wasn't supposed to be any romance between Kimura and Takeuchi? It makes the whole "reunion" so worthless...

And there lays another of the reason why this "reunion" is worthless... the only two characters that have no growth are Okita-sensei and Mifuyu. There wasn't any reason to like them. Like all his other roles, Kimura Takuya plays another cool, smart guy. He is the best doctor, after having lived in Seattle for a decade (but still his "Engrish" is mediocre). So awesome he is as a doctor, that he has performed 70,000 brain surgeries in his life. WHAT. Totally unreal. If it were true, and if he has been performing this kind of surgery for the last 20 years, every day of the year, it would have been 9,5 surgery per day. WHAT. PLU-EASE. He is also loyal, he smiles a thousand-voltio smile that lasts 0.05 seconds. Seriously, it was like watching Kimura, not a fictional character. To me, he was MEH.

Takeuchi Yuko plays the nice Mifuyu, a doctor, daughter of a doctor and the owner of the hospital. She is also a mother, a loving one. And that's it. Does she still love Okita-sensei? Does she love her husband? No idea. Her character was bland and boring.

The support characters are much, MUCH more interesting that the main ones. Masao-san (Asano Tadanobu) plays a disgusting husband who wants to take over the hospital (behind his father-in-law's back) and who is also cheating on his wife. But slowly, you get to see his other facet. I like when I find villains or jerks who are also pitiful. It makes it harder to hate him; in fact, you don't know if you hate him or like him. Which is what happened to me. As episodes went by, you could see that he was a broken man, that he loved his wife, that he was jealous of Okita-sensei but also cared for him.

But did it make the end acceptable for that reason? NO. He tried to sabotage his father-in-law, but at the end, he was back to his position as a Deputy Director. He cheated on his wife, but at the end, it was like it never happened. I see that he loved his wife, and I was happy for him that he was forgiven, but everything was settled to easily, and I don't condone infidelity AT ALL. So this was unforgivable for me.

I really liked Matsuyama Kenichi and I also liked his role. He was funny at times, and he improved after the first couple of episodes where he was jealous of Okita-sensei. Too bad his relationship with the nurse didn't go anywhere, because I was rooting for him and NOT for Okita-sensei.

So the best characters for me were Igawa-sensei and Masao-san because they were played by two wonderful actors. The rest was so MEH. The story wasn't nothing remarkable, although it was entertaining and thankfully, nothing much about romance. What I meant to say is, the dorama is watchable but forgettable.
