Marumo no Okite - review
Apr. 25th, 2014 01:49 pmSynopsis:
Abe plays the single Takagi Mamoru, an employee at a stationery maker. He ends up becoming the guardian of his deceased friend's twin children, played by Ashida and actor Suzuki Fuku. The show is primarily a home drama about the three of them gradually becoming a family, but it also contains an element of fantasy, as the two kids find a dog that can speak (played by a male Miniature Schnauzer)
I've been looking for the subbed dorama for a long time. I was dying to watch it, mostly because of Mana-chan and Fuku-chan, two talented children whom I adore. I watched Fuku-chan in "Youkain Nigem Bem" and, if I am not mistaken, in Episode 3, there is a scene where he cries. And damn, he can cry! I fell in love with him, as well with the dorama.
I saw Mana-chan for the first time in "SMAPxSMAP". She is such a cute little girl! All members of SMAP were happy to have her in the show. And KimuTaku looked smitten, and that is saying something. Then I watched "Mother", and I have to say, I cried in every episode. Gosh, she is an amazing actress.
So of course I had to watch the dorama. They are both terrific there. Being children, they cry for silly things, and even there, my eyes would go moist. I liked Sadao Abe as Marumo. The first time I saw him was in an episode of Cartoon (KAT-TUN). I thought he was "too" nice. So this role suits him perfectly. Also, I liked the actress who played Aya-chan. I've never seen her before, but I thought she was very beautiful.
The story is kind of corny. Maybe because doramas last around 10-11 only they have rush things a little bit, but I did not buy the whole "Marumo is like our father and we love him more than anything" feelings the children have, for a stranger they met recently.
About their mother, I liked her a lot too, I think she acted very well, and the scenes with the children were very touching. The dog was a funny extra, although it did not make sense the twist they tried to do at the end.
There is a moment in the series where 2 boys and 1 girl were eating at the restaurant Marumo's tenant's owns. I immediately thought it was strange they were making a reference to Hana Kimi. Another actress (no idea her name) had a little cameo in the last episode too.
The ending song is very sweet, "Maru maru mori mori", which I've read it was a huge success in Japan. The dorama may not have been great, but it was enjoyable and to watch Mana-chan and Fuku-chan is always a pleasure. Just look at those little faces (so kawaii!)
